After 2 years of strict Covid-19 restrictions, it was great to be able to meet physically again in Vienna for the FTTH conference. The excitement was in the air not only because of travel and event restrictions being relaxed but also being part of this rapidly growing industry and the opportunities that lie ahead.

The conference brought together over 3500 participants and over 1000 companies from more than 100 countries which saw unrivalled experience and in-depth knowledge of the FTTH market all under one roof. The focus was on the latest fibre enabled technologies, new business models and investing in fibre networks which saw some innovative ways of creating the gigabit society.
The key takeout for everyone that is closely linked to the European fibre industry was the market insight report and market panorama with rankings of countries in the FTTH and FTTB arena, which highlighted the massive opportunity for fibre expansion.

The Panorama divulged that the total number of homes passed with FTTH and FTTB in the EU39 countries reached close to 198.4 million in September 2021, compared to 176.3 million in September 2020. The main players in terms of homes passed are France (+4.3 million), the UK (+3.4 million), Germany (+2.4 million) and Italy (+1.5 million).

Three countries represent 58% of the total number of households still to be passed which are Germany with more than 32 million, the UK with more than 21 million and Italy with more than 13 million.

As per the FTTH council Europe, the market forecasts are consistent with previous estimates and predict around 199 million homes passed for FTTH/FTTB in 2027 in the EU27+UK region and 309 million homes passed in the EU39 region. It is expected that the top three countries in terms of homes passed will be France (31.1 million), UK (30.1 million) and Germany (26.9 million).
